In
a perfect world, everyone would have a Health Advocate when they enter the
healthcare system. Not every encounter, however, requires an advocate. In
many cases well informed patients can advocate their own care. But when
you are sick or injured you are most likely your "worst self"
and your negotiation skills and capacity for clear thinking is hindered
by your illness or injury. Indeed, you may not be capable of communicating
with caregivers at all. In these cases, the services of a health advocate,
who knows you and your wishes, is critical.
